Drafting Michael Penix Jr. at 8 was 'roll-of-the-dice' move

After the Atlanta Falcons drafted Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft they created one of the biggest debates in sports talk media right now, and that’s whether or not drafting a quarterback that high when the team just signed Kirk Cousins to a four-year, $180-million contract is a smart move or not.

College football and NFL draft analyst and co-Host on Sports Radio WWL in Louisiana Mike Detillier gave his thoughts on the pick earlier today on The Morning Shift and he thinks this move was a “roll of the dice.”

“You got to live for today in sports and your first-round pick is not going to help you this year," said Detillier. "I mean he’s going to be watching because you spent all this money on Kirk Cousins, and you’ve got an opportunity in a division that you should take over at this point. So it is a roll of the dice at the moment, at this moment three years from now you might have a different opinion of that spot.”

While the Falcons know they want Cousins to be the starter, this move could create an unnecessary quarterback controversy. Mike mentioned this while he was giving his answer as well. Detilleir said that as soon as Cousins has a bad three-interception game that the fans will be calling for Penix to take the field.

Again, it’s not going to happen, but the Falcons will just have to find a way to not let that manifest and be a distraction for the team.
