The Atlanta Falcons' first loss of the season exposed several issues, according to Andy and Randy of The Midday Show. They analyzed the loss to the Detroit Lions and identified key problems that contributed to the disappointing result.
One of the primary concerns was poor pass-protection by the offensive line. The hosts specifically called out Chris Lindstrom and Kaleb McGary, who were given lucrative contracts in the offseason but struggled to provide adequate protection for quarterback Desmond Ridder. The offensive line allowed seven sacks and constant pressure on Ridder, making it difficult for him to perform effectively.
Ridder's performance also came under scrutiny, with Andy and Randy noting that he had accuracy issues, including passes that were too high. They suggested that he didn't play particularly well in the game. Additionally, the hosts questioned the play calling by head coach Arthur Smith, finding it peculiar and not conducive to establishing an offensive rhythm.
On the defensive side, Randy believed that the defense played well enough to win. They were able to contain the Lions, for the most part, and had success on third downs. Jessie Bates III even recorded his third interception of the season (in Lion’s territory that the offensive failed to convert). However, the defense still struggled to sack the quarterback when only rushing the front four, highlighting an area for improvement.
The Falcons' current roster is not structured for the quarterback to carry the team solely on its shoulders. They suggested that improving offensive line play, implementing better situational play calling, and enhancing Ridder's accuracy could go a long way towards improving the outcome of games.
