This past offseason many hosts, reporters, and analysts thought there was no chance the Atlanta Falcons were going to keep Kirk Cousins on the roster after they benched him for Michael Penix Jr. in the second half of last season, and when the Falcons did they were criticized by those same hosts, reporters, and analysts, but earlier today The Morning Shift explained why Sunday’s win over the New Orleans Saints was proof that Atlanta was right to keep the veteran QB on the roster.
“The odds say that you are going to need a good backup quarterback at some point.” Mike Johnson said.
Mike also mentioned how the Falcons were right to not just force a trade just for the sake of getting Cousins off the roster because they knew the money aspect in a Kirk Cousins trade would most likely never match up.
Mike finished his point by saying “You were always going to need a quality veteran backup quarterback to step in in situations like this and that’s absolutely what we saw just two days ago.”
Beau Morgan agreed with Mike’s sentiment and added to Mike’s point by saying “It’s the difference in 4-7 and 3-8 because I’m not sure if you go down there with Easton Stick, nothing against Easton Stick, but I’m not sure if Easton Stick goes down there and you win that game.”
The Falcons had already accounted for Kirk Cousins’ contract being on the books for at least two seasons, so instead of trying to get rid him they made the smart decision in keeping him as a veteran backup quarterback just in case anything happened to Michael Penix Jr. and their win on Sunday against the Saints proved they were right in that thought process.
