Per the report, Matthews will receive $53.5 million over the first three years with a "new money" average of $18.5 million per year. The move also clears up some much-needed cap space for the Falcons.
Matthews has been one of the most consistent offensive linemen for the Falcons, missing only one game since being drafted in 2014.
The Falcons also gained $12 million in cap space by restructuring quarterback Matt Ryan's contract. The can potentially save more cap room if they adjust the contracts of linebacker Deion Jones and defensive tackle Grady Jarrett.
