The New Orleans Saints are set to add depth at a position that appeared in dire need of it heading into Week 1, and the name should ring a bell.

The Saints are expected to sign longtime Falcons cornerback Desmond Trufant, who played last season as a member of the Detroit Lions, according to a report from Ian Rapaport of the NFL Network.

Trufant signed with the Chicago Bears this offseason but was released in August.

The workout with the Saints and apparent deal comes as the team prepares to host the Green Bay Packers in Jacksonville for Week 1, with the lone entrenched player at the position in the form of star Marshon Lattimore. Veteran Ken Crawley appears the most likely choice to start on the outside across from Lattimore, but he is recovering from an injury suffered in the preseason win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Saints also have the services of rookie Paulson Adebo. The former Stanford Cardinal showed well in the preseason but is an unlikely option to start early in his career.

Trufant has a ball-hawking reputation, but has battled injuries in recent seasons and has only seen action in 15 games over the past two years. He does have 14 interceptions and 83 passes defensed to his credit over his eight NFL seasons, and brings a veteran presence to a thin position that must paper over the losses of Janoris Jenkins in free agency, and the retirement of Patrick Robinson earlier in camp.

The Saints announced the signings of wide receiver Chris Hogan, quarterback Trevor Siemian and defensive tackle Montravius Adams earlier in the day.
