The Atlanta Falcons have officially begun their search for the team's next defensive coordinator. What remains to be seen is if they will conduct a broad search or try to make a quick hire in order to firm up their staff as soon as possible. They interviewed over a dozen candidates before hiring Raheem Morris as the team's latest head coach.
With six head coach openings and new coordinator openings seemingly coming down every day it may be prudent for the team to decide on their next coach quickly. But the team also does not want to put itself where it is right now after firing Jimmy Lake after just one season. There are a few strong candidates available including former Jets head coach Robert Saleh and Panthers head man Steve Wilks. The team does not have interviews scheduled with either coach as of Tuesday afternoon.
The team is likely to pivot away from its recent strategy of new coaches and go with someone who has veteran experience calling a defense in the NFL. That strategy most likely eliminates a hot college coach or a defensive mind such as Lake that was just getting into the game.
