Falcons are a head coach away from another Super Bowl run

Jon Chuckery believes the Falcons need to find the right head coach first this offseason

Jon posed a question asking which hire is more important for the Atlanta Falcons in the immediate future: head coach or general manager?

“For the past couple of years this has not been a well-coached football team,” Jon continues by saying that this team still has a core full of talent with Matt Ryan, Julio Jones, Grady Jarrett, and Deion Jones, and that is the reason why he believes in the immediate future it is more important for the Falcons to pick the right head coach rather than a general manager.

Now, don’t get Chuckery wrong, he still wants a top-flight general manager. But his point is that the Falcons still have talent on this roster.

“A good coach will acknowledge and take advantage,” Jon continued his thought by saying that the “Falcons haven’t had a coach that has given them an advantage on Sunday.”

Chuckery then alludes to coaches like Sean Payton and Pete Carroll, and says those coaches give their team an advantage on Sunday. Jon uses Taysum Hill, quarterback, receiver, and running back for the New Orleans Saints, as an example saying “the reason Taysum Hill works in New Orleans is all because of coaching, and he would not work with any other team in the league.”

Next, Jon makes the case that “the Falcons didn’t make it to the Super Bowl in 2016 because of coaching,” but the Falcons made it to the Super Bowl that year because they “out-schemed” teams sometimes, and because they had an “overwhelming offense, and still do.”

Finally, Jon finished his thought by saying that he doesn’t care about getting a coach with a big name, and he actually does not want a “retread” coach. Jon says he wouldn’t like a guy like Rex Ryan or someone like that who has been around. Chuckery says he wants someone who is fresh and someone he can “embrace” whether they are a big name or not.

I think we all can agree with Jon that the Falcons still have talent on this team, and could be competitors. But it comes down to will they first and foremost find a coach who challenges these Falcons players to get better, and then secondly find a general manager who can scout and draft well. It seems like that may have really never happened under the Dan Quinn regime as we heard Falcons players say when interim head coach Raheem Morris stepped in that he made the players feel uncomfortable in a good way that coach Quinn did not do.

With all that being said with the offensive fire power of Ryan, Jones, Calvin Ridley, Russell Gage, and Hayden Hurst, and the young defensive studs of Jarrett, Deion Jones, Foye Oloukun, Kendall Scheffield, and A.J. Terrell, the Falcons just might be the right head coach away from another Super Bowl run.
