The Atlanta Falcons made their decision to bench Kirk Cousins in favor of rookie Michael Penix earlier in the week, but critics have been quick to criticize the coaching staff for waiting too long to make this move. The Steakhouse disagrees with that critique and would say that the team largely played this situation about as well as they could have.
"I don't believe that they waited too long," Steak said about the eventual quarterback change in Atlanta. "If you're putting a rookie in the middle of a playoff deal, 15 games in for his first-ever start, that is an enormous risk."
The Falcons' coaching staff were confident that Cousins was going to round back into the form that got them to 6-3 and had won NFC Offensive Player of the Week. His highs were electric, but he was also averaging a steady 234 yards and 1.5 touchdowns per game while the team was winning games.
"I think their thought was that [Kirk Couisins] was a guy who was five weeks removed from a 500-yard game," Steak continued to which Sandra quickly retorted, "[Kirk and the Falcons' offense] was rolling until fell off a cliff. After that Dallas game, he was never the same."
The Falcons made the right choice with the change at quarterback and they played it as well as they could have possibly hoped. The 13-year veteran had built up plenty of credibility and the staff trusted him to turn it around. He was afforded that window but didn't take advantage, so the team did what it needed to do within a sensible timeline.
Now, we turn to Sunday to see what the next man up can do.
