Why Falcons keeping Kirk Cousins as 'insurance' is the favorable move

The new NFL league year will officially begin on March 12 and unless the Atlanta Falcons have officially cut Kirk Cousins by then, they can start entertaining trade offers for the veteran quarterback should there be any to consider. On Friday, Steak Shapiro and Rusty Mansell shared their thoughts on whether or not moving on from Cousins would be beneficial for the franchise.

“If they release Kirk Cousins, they still have to go and sign a backup quarterback,” Shapiro said, explaining why the financial implications of releasing Cousins while still in need of a back up quarterback would not necessarily play in favor of the Falcons as they would have to spend money on signing a second-string quarterback while taking a hit on Cousins.

As their conversation continued, Shapiro noted he believes the Falcons will likely retain Cousins referencing general manager, Terry Fontenot’s previous comments following the end of their season in which he stated the team would be satisfied having Cousins on the roster as their backup.

“The Falcons don’t care. Kirk Cousins, come get your paycheck, sit over there in seat B because seat A is Michael Penix Jr. and this whole franchise is built around Michael Penix,” Shapiro said of Cousins, who he believes would be a quality “insurance policy but we are not getting rid of you because we are paying you,” Shapiro said.
