Why Falcons/Saints means more this season

The game Sunday between the Falcons and Saints was always going to have a lot on the line as the latest installment of this NFC South rivalry. With the state of the two teams, it now takes on even more meaning. The 4-6 Falcons need to win this game to assert themselves back as a playoff contender and can take control of first place. The 5-5 Saints can deal a tremendous blow to the Falcons’ playoff chances with a victory.

The intensity of the rivalry goes back decades but has fall off in recent seasons with the Falcons out of playoff contention for the last handful of years. Now, this game with double the importance on it will bring out the best, and perhaps the worst, in both fanbases. Many storylines to follow in this matchup include Desmond Ridder’s return as QB 1, Derek Carr in concussion protocol and if the Falcons’ defense can return to form after three sub-par performances leading into their bye week.

The NFC South remains the only foreseeable portal for the Falcons to make the playoffs. Their three-game losing streak took almost all the steam out of attaining a Wildcard spot. Sunday’s contest is a giant test for both teams, but especially for the Falcons as they look to end their losing streak and reestablish Desmond Ridder as their starting quarterback.
