Tua Tagovailoa has a head start to win Falcons QB competition

Since acquiring Tua Tagovailoa, the Atlanta Falcons have stood firm on there being an open competition for the starting quarterback position as Michael Penix Jr. works his way back from surgery to repair a partially torn ACL and both he and Tagovailoa get accustomed to new head coach, Kevin Stefanski’s, offense.

“Personally, if I’m using my thoughts on this discussion, I don’t think Penix [Jr.] will be ready Week 1,” 92-9 The Game’s Abe Gordon said as he and Mike Bell shared their thoughts on when the Falcons quarterback competition could potentially begin due to the fact Penix Jr.’s return has yet to be determined.

“I think Tua [Tagovailoa] has got free reign at quarterback as a starter going into the season, so I think the quarterback competition begins Week 1 based on Tua’s [Tagovailoa] in-game performance,” Gordon continued as he explained with no timeline established for Penix Jr.’s return, Tagovailoa would be in the driver’s seat to win the starting role.

“If he is good, the quarterback competition does not begin. If he is bad, that’s when it begins. Whenever Penix [Jr.] is a full go in season and Tua’s bad,” Gordon said of when he predicts the start of a true competition for the Falcons QB1 role.
