The Atlanta Falcons have a huge decision on their hands when it comes to who will be their next starting quarterback. The team can either trade for another team’s signal caller, trade up in the upcoming NFL Draft or sign a free agent. If the team wants to bring in an experienced quarterback, new reports are showing it’s going to be a costly move.
The Pioneer Press in Minnesota reported Monday that free agent Kirk Cousins would command $45 million dollars guaranteed per season. That sort of hit on the salary cap would put the Falcons in a precarious situation. After taking multiple years to get out of Matt Ryan and Julio Jones’ contract a huge number like that for Cousins would have a tremendous impact on their ability to sign other important pieces.
One could declare that having a QB of Cousins’ stature could be the difference between winning the NFC South and the team’s first playoff victory in six seasons. Another option could be to trade for Justin Fields, but that move would be expensive as well. Fields would need his fifth-year option picked up and then command a long-term deal the following offseason.
