There’s no debate that Trae Young is an All-Star-level player, but is he a superstar?
“If he doesn’t make All-Star teams, if he doesn’t make the Olympic team, you can’t make the playoffs with him," Beau Morgan said. "This isn’t personal criticism I just think it’s fair to ask is he a superstar."
While All-Star Games have turned into popularity contests, Young has managed to be in three All-Star games. When the Hawks made that run to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021, Young made All-NBA third team, but that has been his only All-NBA nod thus far in his career. Before being eliminated in the NBA Play-In Tournament this season the Hawks made the playoffs in three consecutive seasons.
The case for Young being a superstar is there, but with the team’s lack of major playoff success since the Eastern Conference Finals run in 2021, the superstar label just doesn’t seem as obvious as it did a few years ago.
