Brian Kelly to make LSU coaching debut in TaxAct Texas Bowl

Brian Kelly will make his LSU coaching debut next month in the TaxAct Texas Bowl.

The Southeastern Conference announced on Sunday that the Tigers have been selected to play in the Texas Bowl, where they will face Kansas State at NRG Stadium in Houston on Jan. 4 at 8 p.m. CT on ESPN.


It is the 21st time in the last 22 years that LSU has been selected to a bowl game.

The Tigers finished the season 6-6, winning their final two games to become bowl-eligible with a 27-24 win over Texas A&M.

“Our football team fought hard down the stretch of the regular season to qualify for bowl competition,” LSU Director of Athletics Scott Woodward said in a press release. “We know our fans will be excited to see the Tigers back in NRG Stadium, and our players will be eager to take the field for a primetime matchup on national television.”

LSU agreed to a contract separation with head coach Ed Orgeron earlier this season and decided to officially ways with him at the end of the regular season.

The Tigers hired Kelly from Notre Dame in a move that sent shockwaves across the college football landscape.

It is the second time LSU will be competing in the Texas Bowl, which last happened in 2015 when the beat Texas Tech, 56-27.
