#1 Tennessee at #3 Georgia: Who steps up in Nolan Smith’s absence?

On Tuesday morning before the first release of the College Football Playoff rankings, Andy & Randy were joined by DawgNationDaily host Brandon Adams as the three talked about who will step up the most with defensive end Nolan Smith out for the season due to a pectoral injury in a matchup of top three teams.

Georgia, surprisingly to some, came in ranked third in the first release of the College Football Playoff rankings. Tennessee was ranked No. 1 for the first time ever in the playoff rankings era of college football. Here is the rest of the initial rankings:

After explaining how Smith’s leadership was unique in a lot of ways, Adams explained how Robert Beal could be the player to help fill the void left by Smith’s season-ending injury.

“A guy like Robert Beal who is going to be on the field more. Beal was, believe or not, Georgia’s leading sack man a year ago. For all the talk about all those first round picks, it was actually Beal who had the most sacks,” Adams said.

“Last year it was around this time when Adam Anderson left the team for a very different reason than what we are saying with Nolan Smith here but when Anderson stepped away Robert Beal kind of stepped up. Maybe the same thing could happen throughout the rest of this year I don’t know but one way or another Georgia has to find some pass rush somewhere because it hasn’t had nearly enough of it and now it’s about to face teams where you have to have a good bit more of that if you want to thrive like you did this time a season ago,” Adams added.

Beal had 6.5 sacks last season while he only has 0.5 sack through eight games this year.

No. 3 Georgia hosts No. 1 Tennessee at 3:30 p.m. on CBS this Saturday November 5.
