UGA Head Coach Kirby Smart could be getting his wish granted very soon of having the Georgia vs Florida annual game moved to each school's respective campus very soon.
In an interview with 1010 XL, Jacksonville mayor Lenny Curry talked about the current home of the game (and also home of the NFL's Jags), TIAA Bank Stadium, would be underdoing renovations that would possibly see the building not used for any football games during the two years for repairs. That would put the game at home-and-home sites for '25 and '26.
While it looks more definite of the games being in Athens and Gainesville those years, Georgia and Florida are also in a position right now to decide if the games will continue for the '23 and '24 seasons as well.
As it stands now, there is nothing in place contractually to keep games in Jacksonville past this upcoming year. Both schools have until June 30th to decide whether or not to exercise fifth and sixth year options the next two seasons.
Kirby Smart has been very outspoken on his desire to see the games move back to on-campus, something that this series hasn't seen since the 1994 and 1995 games, both won by Florida. Speaking ahead of the Florida game this year, Kirby said "When it comes down to it, there’s a very, very basic element of everything comes back to, number one money and number two, recruiting and getting good players. I firmly believe that we’ll be able to sign better players by having it as a home-and-home because we’ll have more opportunities to get them to campus.”
Steak and Drew discussed the impact of moving this game on this morning's Steakhouse, and how UGA's current status as two-time defending national champion gives them an advantage in deciding what they want the future of this game to be.
