ESPN/SEC Network college football analyst D.J. Shockley joined the Midday Show on Tuesday and was asked to give his thoughts on the 'Kirby Smart' era thus far.
Yesterday was the five-year anniversary of Kirby Smart being the head coach of the University of Georgia football program.
How would you describe the five-year tenure of the 'Kirby' era?
"I would say that it's been one of big expectations but, also, some disappointments," Shockley told Andy and Randy.
"If you look at the way this tenure started--and I think a lot of people expected around year four, year five, that Georgia would be in a National Championship game, or had won one by now. You go out and do it in your second year, the expectations shoot up tremendously."
Smart and the Bulldogs lost to the Alabama in the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship game, 26-23. Since then, the expectations are that Georgia should be in that situation every year.
"I give Kirby a alot of credit. He's done an excellent job at recruiting. He's got Georgia on a national stage every single year, and everybody looks at Georgia as one of those national contenders."
"The disappointing part is, you haven't won one. You've done everything up to that particular moment, and you just haven't been able to finish it off. That's why I said 'disappointing' but he's definitely taken this program to new heights."
