SEC, Georgia on the same page in 'break away' consideration
The 2026 SEC Media Days are well underway and conference commissioner Greg Sankey and Georgia Bulldogs head coach, Kirby Smart did not shy away from their thoughts on what alternatives the conference could consider should the NCAA be unable to implement rules in which all Power 5 conferences would be in total agreement on.
“Yeah, I've actually been there for a long time,” Smart said when asked to share his thoughts on Sankey’s comments in regards to the SEC considering “breaking away” from the NCAA. “I think it’s just more of a threat,” Connor Riley of Dawg Nation and the AJC.com said on Tuesday as he joined 92-9 The Game’s Mike Bell and Abe Gordon to explain why he believes both Sankey and Smart’s comments are about leverage for the SEC.
“The SEC sort of wants to get their way, they want things to go a certain way for them, for the league in terms of what comes next,” Riley said of the conference being displeased with the state of college football and seeking uniformity in rules and agreement in rules amongst all the conferences. “I think for Georgia and the SEC at large, I think a lot of this is hollow right now, but I would like to see a world in which maybe they do follow through with it if they believe the way things are going isn’t right for them as a conference,” Riley said.Can the SEC make separating from NCAA a reality and survive?
