With Texas being ranked No. 2 and Georgia coming in at No. 5 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, The Morning Shift believes the College Football Playoff committee sent a very clear message Tuesday night.
“Unless Georgia gets just absolutely taken to the woodshed, which I don’t believe they’re gonna be in the College Football Playoff and they’re gonna be hosting a game,” Beau Morgan said.
Jerry Palm, college football writer for CBS Sports, shared the same sentiment when he joined the show and they asked him if the loser between Georgia and Texas will still be locked in to hosting a first-round playoff game.
“Well Texas I think certainly would be," Palm said. "I don’t really expect Georgia to suffer much either in a loss unless they get drilled, unless Texas just runs them then maybe Georgia could fall a little bit. But historically speaking these championship games for the committee when the lower-ranked team loses a competitive game the committee is very forgiving of that.
"If they get blown out, that's different.”
As it stands right now, Texas is the projected 2 seed and Georgia is the projected 7 seed in the 12-team bracket, with the Bulldogs hosting Indiana in the first round. So what the committee is telling us about Georgia, Texas, and the SEC championship is quite clear. Whoever wins the SEC championship Game on Saturday will likely be the 2 seed and have a first-round bye. The loser will be the 7 seed and hosting a first-round playoff game barring a blowout.
Not a bad spot to be in if you’re Texas or Georgia.
