The Corona virus hit college football and the SEC hard this week. Four SEC games have been postponed due to the virus, including the Georgia/Missouri game. Ross Bjork the Athletics Director at Texas A&M said on Wednesday that regular season games would be played on the day of the SEC Championship game. Typically that game is a stand-alone event. It will have company this year as it appears there may be a full day of SEC football and then the conference championship game kicking off in primetime from Mercedes Benz Stadium.
The Southeastern Conference has handled this pandemic almost flawlessly. Notice the word almost. The conferences return to play has been pretty smooth. Well, smooth up until this week at least. Hindsight is 20/20 and while it’s easy to see what the SEC was trying to do with the delayed start date, the conference should have started a week earlier and given themselves two weeks to make up games. There are five weeks left for the SEC to get games in. The College Football Playoff Committee starts meeting in less than two weeks. SEC teams will be trying to make a favorable impression on the committee. Texas A&M Is the one team that can’t afford to miss a game. Win out and the one-loss Aggies have a shot at the number four spot in the playoffs.
Coaching Hot Seat:
No real solid rumors about Derick Mason at Vanderbilt but he would be the odds on favorite to be the first SEC coach to be terminated. South Carolina seems to be growing weary of Will Muschamp. The Gamecocks have lost 17 games the last three years, 12 have been by 14 points or more. Not only are the Gamecocks losing games…they are getting blown out. The questions around South Carolina don’t stop with Muschamp. Athletic Director Ray Tanner may be on the way out as well. Watch out for Tom Herman at Texas. Rumor has it there are enough boosters willing to write the check to send Herman on his way. What isn’t know is if Texas can persuade Urban Meyer to come to Austin. Sounds like it’s Urban or bust and no Meyer may mean Herman gets at least one more year.
