The Georgia defense, an historic unit, currently tops the country allowing just 7.5 points per game. Their defensive coordinator, Dan Lanning, is a name gaining some steam in the coaching community.
While Lanning has never been a head coach before, it appears to only be a matter of time, especially considering how many desirable jobs are open right now.
Lanning was considered for the Kansas job before this current season, but the job was eventually given to Lance Leipold. Lanning is among the highest-paid assistant coaches in the country, raking in $1.25 million for the 2021 season.
While Lanning many not be in the running for the top jobs available like LSU, Florida, or USC, spots like Virginia Tech, Washington, or Miami (if it comes open) could be of interest.

We've seen Nick Saban lose assistant after assistant to head coaching opportunities, and it seems like Kirby Smart may also be approaching that level of success. We've seen Mel Tucker, Sam Pittman, and now possibly Lanning, leave Athens for other gigs.
