Hot Pockets, anyone?
While the Phillies haven’t been able to host fans at Citizen’s Bank Park this season, they’ve made good use of their parking lot, hosting performers as part of the team’s ongoing “Live-in Drive-in” series. Next Saturday’s festivities will be headlined by popular comedian Jim Gaffigan, with tickets (one per car) now available through Ticketmaster.
Gaffigan, whose standup material often touches on subjects such as food (particularly his love of Hot Pockets) and raising his five children, has held numerous shows in Philadelphia over the years including in 2015, when he performed in front of Pope Francis at the Festival of Families. That event was staged at the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, not far from the famous “Rocky Steps” outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Gaffigan’s recent special “Quality Time,” released exclusively on Amazon Prime, was nominated for Best Comedy Album at this year’s Grammys (he lost to Dave Chappelle, who won for the third straight year).
Citizen’s Bank Park, which shares a parking lot with nearby Lincoln Financial Field (home of the Philadelphia Eagles) and the Wells Fargo Center (where the Sixers and Flyers both play their home games), has been a busy place recently. Though only players and staff are permitted on stadium grounds, a number of devoted fans who call themselves the Phandemic Krew, have camped out by the park’s entrance, sounding air horns and cheering on their beloved Phillies from afar. The Krew has even made its presence felt at away games, traveling to Boston for the Phillies’ series at Fenway Park earlier this week. Unfortunately, Philadelphia’s on-field performance has been lacking as the 9-13 Phils—losers of four straight entering Saturday—have largely squandered MVP-caliber seasons from Bryce Harper and free-agent-to-be J.T. Realmuto.
Those attending Gaffigan’s performance should be advised that gates open at 6:30 PM ET next Saturday (August 29). Perhaps we’ll even see some Phillies at the event. With first pitch scheduled for 1:15, they should be finished hosting Atlanta long before Gaffigan takes the stage at 8 PM. Gaffigan is known as a “clean comic” who eschews profanity in his acts, so families are welcome.
