Mets legend David Wright has kept a relatively low-profile since his MLB retirement two years ago, largely owing to his lack of a social-media presence. So what’s Captain America up to these days?
According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, who co-wrote Wright’s upcoming memoir “The Captain,” the seven-time All-Star welcomed his third child earlier this week with wife Molly giving birth to the couple’s first son, Brooks David Wright on Tuesday morning. That name choice would seem to be a nod to Orioles great Brooks Robinson who, like Wright, was one of the sport’s premier third basemen throughout his Hall of Fame career. The little tyke may be in Pampers now, but with pop’s bloodlines, Brooks should be a rock-solid ballplayer when he’s older.
A Mets lifer, Wright retired as New York’s all-time leader in hits (1,777), RBI (970), runs scored (949), doubles (390), singles (1,119), plate appearances (6,872) and offensive WAR (51.9). The Norfolk, Virginia native was on a Hall of Fame trajectory, before injuries including a chronic back condition (spinal stenosis) sabotaged the latter half of his career. Wright captained the US squad (hence his nickname) at both the 2009 and 2013 World Baseball Classics and also appeared in the 2015 World Series, which the Mets lost in five games to Kansas City.
As noted by DiComo, Lil’ Wright will be eligible for the 2039 MLB Draft, so keep an eye out. Here’s hoping Brooks and Charlie Freeman team up and rip the league to shreds in 20 years.
