Golf star Collin Morikawa turned in a blistering second round at the British Open on Friday, taking the early lead and positioning himself for a serious run at the Claret Jug over the weekend.

The 24-year-old American shot a tidy 6-under-par 64 on Friday, coming on the heels of a 67 in the opening round on Thursday. The 2020 PGA Championship winner was a combined 9-under par through the first two rounds at Royal St. George's in Sandwich, England, good for a 3-stroke lead over three others who were tied at 6-under.

Several groups were still on the course or had not yet teed off when Morikawa's round wrapped up, so the leaderboard was still fluid.

Even still, Morikawa's brilliance on Thursday and Friday alone put him in historic company. The Cal Berkeley alum's 36-hole score of 131 set a new mark for low score in an Open Championship debut, according to the PGA. Only four golfers have won the esteemed tournament on their first try, the last being Ben Curtis in 2003.

Morikawa wowed Golf Twitter with his impressive round, particularly his uncanny approach game, which, by some measures, has been historically proficient this season.

Many fans expressed their amazement at the clinic put on by Morikawa.

The display even conjured memories of Tiger Woods in his prime, for some.
