Matt Schaub found himself in an interesting statistical predicament. It's never a good thing to be at the top of a list of NFL records involving pick sixes if you're a quarterback. But it's practically never a bad thing to be next to Tom Brady in the NFL record books, either.
And so when Week 3 of the 2020 NFL season rolled around, Schaub found that he had an oddly specific rooting interest. He really wanted Tom Brady to throw a pick six, in this week of all weeks, for a very justifiable reason.
Back in 2013, Schaub's final year in Houston, he went on an unforgettable run of four consecutive games with a pick six thrown, beginning with an interception in Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans and ending with one in a massive defeat at the hands of the 49ers in Week 5. It was a four-week span which saw Schaub throw eight interceptions to five touchdowns, and one that would be hard to put out the mind of the quarterback or of angry Houston fans.
Fast forward seven years, and he was almost able to see that record tied by none other than perhaps the greatest quarterback of all time, Tom Brady.
"Last year, his last throw in New England against Tennessee was a pick six to Logan Ryan, correct?" Schaub asked the hosts of "Pardon My Take" in a rhetorical manner on Wednesday's episode.
"And then he started this year with a pick six in Week 1 and Week 2, so if you look at the records, yes, I had four straight games... so I was sitting there in Week 3. I was like, Tom, please throw another one so you can be tied with me.
"It would've been great to just be right there with Tom with that record."
Unfortunately for Schaub and vengeful Patriots fans — and fortunately, for Bucs fans and Brady himself — the future Hall of Famer turned it around after a rough start to his Tampa Bay career by tossing three touchdowns in Week 3 without an interception and shredding the Chargers for five scores the next week.
Still, Brady joined Matt Schaub and Blaine Gabbert when he threw a pick six for the third game in a row, making this one of the most unique, random and hilarious trios of quarterbacks we've seen in the record books.
Schaub called it a career this week, finishing his impressive 17-year body of work with a 47-46 overall record as a starter, over 25,000 passing yards and a 136-to-91 touchdown to interception split.
