Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Mike Brey has a message for his fellow collegiate coaches:

“Shut up and adjust.”

Brey delivered the message at the ACC’s annual spring meetings, which came amid outcry from coaches in basketball and football about the new name, image and likeness deals affecting the college game and the NCAA’s new push toward regulating them.

“[Coaches] have got to stop complaining,” Brey said, per ESPN. “This is the world we’re in, and last time I checked, we make pretty good money. So everybody should shut up and adjust.”

The NIL deals, which became legal last summer, appear to be playing a role in the transfer portal, particularly among ACC schools.

Miami Hurricanes basketball player Isaiah Wong reportedly threatened to transfer if not offered more NIL money (he decided to stay). Meanwhile, Pitt wide receiver Jordan Addison entered the portal and allegations immediately arose that USC tampered and attempted to recruit him prior to entering the portal and rumors grew that his transfer could be connected to an NIL deal valued in the millions.

The NCAA announced on Monday new guidelines that specifically addresses the “collectives,” or NIL-focused companies who aim to pool financial resources of a university’s fan base to attract players with high-dollar offers.

Yet, Brey was not optimistic the NCAA would really enforce this “pay-for-play” policy.

“They’re talking a big game but they always have talked a big game about that,” Brey said.

Of course, Notre Dame seems to have benefitted from the new one-time transfer rule thus far, landing Niagara guard Marcus Hammond, who averaged 18.1 points per game in the MAAC last year.
