Sean Payton channels Ted Lasso with gift for Saints owner Gayle Benson

Sean Payton announced on Tuesday he was stepping down as head coach of the New Orleans Saints, but not before delivering a Ted Lasso-like gesture in his final press conference.

The 58-year-old took a page out of the fictional head coach’s book, and brought some baked goods to give to the team owner, Gayle Benson, before he officially left.

While Ted Lasso is known for giving biscuits to his female boss, Payton instead went with a king cake — a blend of coffee cake and cinnamon roll that is often packed with fruit fillings and decadent cream cheeses.

“I’m kind of a Ted Lasso fan and I do have a regret,” Payton said in his press conference. “Fifteen seasons, 16 years here, I’ve got like the best female owner in the world of sports and we don’t do biscuits here in New Orleans, but we do king cakes. Where’s Mrs. B?”

Payton then got up from the podium and gave Benson a hug while delivering the king cakes.

No word on if Payton put up a “Believe” poster in the locker room this year, though.
