Whether it’s an NFL football, a college football game, or a high school football game, winning a football game is hard at any level, even Pop Warner. A lot of teams go through droughts where they might go on a three, five, and maybe even a seven game losing streak. Well, this team was long overdue for a win as the Centennial High School Football team hadn’t won a game since 2018, but that ended tonight. A lot of the credit for ending the Knight’s long losing streak belongs to second year head coach Sean O’Sullivan, and that makes him this week’s Coach of the Night.
When it comes to the first win a while Coach O’Sullivan said “I’ve been telling our kids since January you know we’ve been working extremely hard just like everybody else in the state, but I told our juniors that have been starting since they were freshman, some of our seniors, they have not won a football game since at centennial, so to achieve that for them is why you coach high school football to see the joy on their faces, to see the joy in our community tonight at the game I mean you know it takes a village, and I mean it was just unbelievable for everybody.” The guys also asked Coach O’Sullivan if tonight just felt different, and he said “Well I think the biggest thing was that it was 7-6 at halftime, and we had made a bunch of mistakes, and I told the guys at halftime it’s a four round fight, you guys haven’t been putting in work in that weight room you know to not eventually take over a football game, and we just got to grounding and pounding, we played good defense, and ran the ball well and I mean you guys know you’ve been doing this a long time this game is not rocket science, so once you get going you stick with it.” Needless to say, those are very wise words from the coach.
If life teaches you anything, it teaches you not to take things for granted. I’m pretty sure Coach O’Sullivan didn’t take wins for granted beforehand, but I know he’s definitely not now. Coaches in any sport at any level don’t get a long time to celebrate wins, but this would be a good exception for Coach O’Sullivan because after breaking a long losing streak, coach might want to enjoy this one a little while longer, and who could blame him? Congratulations to our week five Coach of the night Sean O’Sullivan on a big win tonight.
