In the era of the college transfer portal, high school student athletes across the country continue to feel the impacts of college coaches choosing to dip into the portal for talent versus giving a scholarship offer to a high school student. And in as the high school student athlete adapts to the new recruiting landscape, many find themselves with a smaller window of decision making due to the fact that either they may not be garnering their desired amount of scholarship offers and the offers they are receiving, may not be extended to them for a long period of time, even potentially being rescinded.
On Saturday, 92-9 The Game and Prep Sports Nation’s Daminon “DA-DA” Lewis spoke with Zion Rutledge, senior linebacker and wrestler for the Hillgrove Hawks and the two discussed Rutledge’s recruiting process and how much the transfer portal impacted it. “When it comes to athletes like me, the college coaches would be like ‘we love your film, we love this, we love that,’ but my biggest thing was just height and the transfer portal really killed me,” Rutledge said as he explained that with him standing at 5-foot-11, many college coaches opted for the portal “and get a guy that’s 6’3 and he’s already got college experience,” Rutledge said.
