Notre Dame vs. Coastal Carolina, Indiana vs. Texas A&M, Iowa St. vs. Florida, and Georgia vs. Cincinnati. That would be the 1st round matchups in 2020 if the College Football Playoffs were expanded to 12 teams. Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, and Oklahoma would get 1st round byes.
Coastal Carolina and Cincinnati making the playoffs? That is a non-Power 5 football teams dream. To get a chance on the biggest stage with the big boys.
And don't think that they couldn't win some games in this format. No one thought a Boise State team could beat Oklahoma. No one gave Cincinnati a shot against Georgia in the Peach Bowl.
It really doesn't matter if the small schools win, either. It's the exposure and the promise to get a chance to play on the biggest stage. More money and exposure let's small programs build into a program that can constantly compete with Power 5 schools ie. Central Florida.
The College Football Playoff expansion is a win not only for the big schools, but the non-Power 5 as well. Bring on the upsets.
