LOS ANGELES (KNX) – A fifth arrest was made at Los Angeles City Hall during a council meeting on Friday.

KNX News’ Craig Fiegener said the arrest was connected to a dispute between two men, one of whom was Candido Marez. Marez ran against former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan in 1997.

“I came in, I went to go sit down and the gray-haired lady there told the Black man that I was the one that said something about them being kicked and she goes about them being KKK, ‘they're not here for the right reasons. All they do is disrupt the meeting,’” he said. “And then the African American guy came over and pushed me.”

Marez claimed the man shoved him in the shoulders.

The man accused of pushing Marez was taken away in handcuffs. His identity is unknown at this time.

Just this week, a city hall protester was arrested for possession of a deadly weapon, suspicion of battery on an officer, and disrupting a meeting.

Tensions have been high in the City Council chambers since a recording of former City Council President Nury Martinez, Councilmember Kevin de León, and former Councilmember Gil Cedillo making racist remarks was leaked to the public.

While Martinez resigned and Cedillo lost his seat in the 2022 election, de León said he refuses to step down from City Council, causing many to protest inside the City Council chambers.
