A massive Amazon Web Services outage on Monday caused major tech problems with a bunch of companies and in people’s homes.

KNX News’ Emily Valdez reported that her Amazon Alexa made everything really loud and that it wouldn't turn off. KNX News Editor Brian Bielanski also had issues with his Amazon Alexa, remarking that everything felt like the movie  ‘Poltergeist.’

“About an hour before I was supposed to wake up this morning…my alarm went off and woke up my wife, very, very loud,” he told Valdez.

Companies impacted by the outage included Snapchat, Venmo, Reddit, Ring, Verizon, Battlefield, Roblox, Lyft, and McDonald’s.

Lou Rabon, who runs Cyber Defense Group in Pasadena, told Valdez this shows Amazon has become almost “the sole provider of infrastructure for a number of these companies.”

“This is gonna cost Amazon a lot of money, a lot of reputational damage,” he said. “It's definitely going to lead to people likely deciding not to use or take infrastructure off of Amazon so they don't experience this again. But there's gonna be some fallout from this for sure.”

The cause of the outage remains unknown.
