California’s Independent System Operator issued an emergency alert Thursday night.
“California ISO declared an Emergency Energy Alert 1 at 7:30 p.m., but was able to secure additional resources and ended the declaration at 8:30 p.m.,” they said.
Cal-ISO said it issued the alert due to “heat conditions and higher than anticipated demand.”
“However, the market was able to secure additional resources and ended the emergency declaration,” they said.
Mark Rothleder, the senior vice president and chief operating officer for Cal-ISO, told L.A. Morning News that although the state is in much better shape this summer than summers past, conditions change.
“We went into the 8 p.m. pm hour just a little bit, shorter of supply than we'd want to in terms of the exchanges with our neighbors and other states, and as the sun goes down, we lose some of the energy from the solar power and we got just a little bit too tight,” he said.
Rothleder added that we should be in better shape on Friday than we were Thursday.
Cal-ISO said a Flex Alert is not planned for Friday.
