A candlelight vigil will be held on Friday night to honor a woman who was allegedly killed by her husband in North Hollywood.

Mayra Jimenez was killed earlier this week. Her husband, a Glendale firefighter, was charged in the murder on Friday.

Jimenez was a second-grade teacher at Wilshire Park Elementary. Her friend, Alexandra Dia, described her not only as a hero who shaped young minds but also as a highly respected and trusted teacher.

“Her students know her as Mrs. Jimenez, and her connection with them was deep and lasting to the point that she would have families continue to visit her even after their kids left her classroom,” she said.

Dia also recalled when she and Jiminez worked together at an elementary school in Koreatown, they partnered up for a winter performance to teach their second-graders a dance.

“My favorite memory is looking over at her during the actual winter holiday performance among all the kids in the auditorium and all of their parents, and just looking at her with, like, the biggest smile, like, look at what we get to do,” she said. “We get to make this happen. We get to light up these kids.”

The vigil will be held at 5:30 PM at Wilshire Park Elementary.
