The fire, which was declared a major emergency, was reported about 5:50 a.m. in the 2100 block of East Violet Street on the east side of downtown L.A.
No injuries were reported, but the fire was under "active investigation," said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.
The first arriving crews encountered flames coming through the roof of the one-story building, Humphrey said.
A total of 109 firefighters joined the battle, which for a time involved defensive operations as crews poured water on the building from a safe distance.
The mezzanine collapsed inside the building as the fire burned and crews doused the flames with ladder hoses.
The fire was declared out after a 44-minute response, according to Humphrey, who said no evacuations were necessary.
