Businesses are battling back against the city of Los Angeles’ plans to raise the minimum wage for hotel and airport workers to $30 an hour by 2028.

A coalition of airlines, hotels and shops at LAX are trying to force a citywide vote to repeal the new local law, which was approved by City Council earlier this month.

Phil Singer, a spokesperson for the group, told the L.A. Times that the increase "threatens revenue Los Angeles urgently needs."

Kurt Peterson from Unite Here Local 11, which represents hotel workers, called the proposal to repeal the wage hike “shameful.”

“They would rather spend millions getting them to sign this petition than pay their workers enough to live in Los Angeles,” he told the L.A. Times.

The business group will need to collect about 93,000 signatures within 30 days to qualify for the ballot in the next election.
