LAPD detective shot in South L.A., 14-year old in custody

A 20-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department is expected to recover after being shot at Thursday morning while driving to work. The suspect, a 14-year-old boy, is in custody on suspicion of shooting at the detective, LAPD said.

The shooting happened at the intersection of E 34th Street and South Central Avenue, near the Newton Community Police Station where LAPD said the detective works in the juvenile crimes unit.

"He was in his plainclothes, he was coning to work in his personal vehicle," Assistant Police Chief Robert Marion said. "Just driving down Central Avenue like anyone else would be at that time driving to work."

Officials said the the boy allegedly shot at the vehicle during the detective's drive, grazing his head with a bullet. The detective, who's name has not been released, was conscious and breathing as he was taken to the hospital, LAPD said.

Police Chief Michel Moore tweeted hours after the shooting, and said he was grateful the detective is going to survive the unprovoked attack.

"Our Robbery Homicide detectives have investigation and I’m confident they will identify the individual(s) responsible. Too many guns in too many hands," Moore said.

The scene remained active until 7 a.m., as investigators continued to search for shell casings and other evidence. LAPD said.

Details of the suspect involved in his shooting have not been released.
