Police took one person into custody believed to be responsible for a fire that ripped through a train yard in Wilmington Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Officers confirmed one man is in custody as part of their investigation into the fire’s origin. The blaze, which began sometime after 2 p.m., tore through the 1400 block of N Alameda Street. LAPD said its Habor Division officers made an arrest around 2:40 p.m. but have not identified the man or any charges.
Burning train cars, tires, and commercial debris sent large plumes of black smoke into the air and across South Bay neighborhoods.
Concerned about dangerous explosions, firefighters called in a hazardous waste team. Officials said several explosions heard inside the blaze were burning tires.
Several dozen firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department extinguished the fire just after 4 p.m.
