LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho is speaking out, two weeks after the FBI raided his home and district offices.

Carvalho’s attorney sent the following statement to the Los Angeles Times:

“Mr. Carvalho remains confident that the evidence will ultimately demonstrate that he acted appropriately and in the best interests of students. We hope the school board reinstates him promptly to his position as superintendent.”

LA Times education reporter Howard Blume spoke with KNX News about that statement.

“I think that Carvalho was trying to avoid saying anything inflammatory, and he was saying that he would respect the playing out of the investigation process, but he also wanted to make clear that he was innocent,” Blume said. “That's his assertion, and also that he would like to return to his job leading the nation's second-largest school district.”

The probe was confirmed to be over a multi-million dollar contract the district signed with an AI firm to develop a chatbot for students and teachers. That project collapsed, and the company went bust months after the tech initiative was launched.

After the raid, the school board put Carvalho on administrative leave.
