Man shot, killed in West Athens area

Sheriff's detectives Friday are investigating the fatal shooting of a man near the West Athens area and South Los Angeles.

Deputies responded to the intersection of 119th Street and Vermont Avenue, on the border between the unincorporated West Athens area and South Los Angeles, Thursday at 5:25 p.m. regarding a gunshot victim call, said homicide Lt. Arturo Spencer.

Upon their arrival, deputies they learned the victim had suffered from an apparent gunshot wound to his torso. Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel responded and took the victim to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

His name was being withheld pending notification of relatives by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner's office.
