Our KNX Heroes of the Week, LAPD Officers Joseph Murphy and Yevgeny Shipley, turned a tragic moment into a heroic display of teamwork and saved a man’s life!

The officers were on patrol one day in downtown Los Angeles when they noticed a crowd near a car.

“We didn't realize what we were looking at initially, but one of the people in the crowd was yelling that there's someone under the car,” Officer Murphy told Heroes Host Heather Jordan.

The officers quickly found out that the car had run over a person and dragged them down the street a short ways.

“Our focus was just making sure that the guy was OK,” Murphy said. “We're trying to call out to him. He's literally wedged underneath the car, and we're not hearing any response at all. So at that moment, kind of just training kicked in, and then my partner and I systematically just went to work trying to resolve the situation. “

The officers rallied together the concerned witnesses, and as a team they lifted the vehicle off of the injured man.

“I want to say there were at least six, eight of us and we all kind of in unison just lifted this car off of this guy,” Murphy said.

Officers Murphy and Shipley and the witnesses were able to get the man out and despite his severe injuries, he survived.

“We wouldn't have been able to do it without the citizens that stopped and took the time to help us,” Murphy said. “I know there was some apprehension initially because, you know, they were worried that the car might fall back down on top of them if we weren't able to lift it, but you know, we gave it our best shot, and it worked out in the end.”
