An Altadena nursery is giving away free trees at its Winter Market all weekend to homeowners devastated by the Eaton Fire.

Plant Material secured 1,000 native trees that will be free to Eaton Fire survivors.

“We have a ton of oaks, Engleman oak, which grows in the Pasadena area, the coastline of oak, canyon oaks,” Matt Burrows, cofounder of Plant Material, told KNX News’ Karen Adams. “We have buckeyes, we have alders, a broad range, some native cypress, many different, like extremely high-quality trees from our growing partners that people can plant in their yards or hold onto for a little bit if they need a little bit more time.”

Burrows, whose home was lost and business damaged in the fire, hopes the tree giveaway will help homeowners as they rebuild.

“Costs to rebuild are coming in astronomically high. It's something that we're all facing,” he said. “ We’re going to try to make it work, but we know that when we're done building a home, you know, just four walls and a roof to live in. There's not going to be a lot of money left over for landscaping, so in the future, I really hope to do this again as people are finishing their homes and looking to do more gardening.”
