Police in the San Fernando Valley are seeing a spike in thefts at fitness centers and gyms in the area.
“Equinox, 24 Hour Fitness, L.A. Fitness, Gold's Gym, Planet Fitness, those are all some of the different gyms that have been targeted,” North Hollywood Detective Lt. Ryan Lee told KNX News’ Pete Demetriou.
Items taken range from wallets, credit cards, and watches worth thousands of dollars.
Lt. Lee said some of the thefts happen when people leave items in gym bags when they’re in workout areas and in the gym lockers.
“People are able to get past the locking mechanisms in the lockers, and they're able to quickly and swiftly go into a locker and remove people's valuables and flee the location,” he said.

In addition to urging people to keep a close eye on their gym bag and using a robust lock on their locker, police are also asking gyms to have lockers for valuables in the front of locations surveilled by CCTV cameras or staff as a way of cutting down the thefts.
