Crews are continuing a fast-growing blaze that started in Simi Valley on Monday morning.
The Sandy Fire was first reported around 10 a.m. off Sandy Ave., according to CalFire. As of 11:00 a.m., the fire was at 10 acres. Around 11:18 a.m., the fire was at 184 acres. At 12:46 p.m., the fire reached 500 acres, Ventura County Fire's Andrew Dowd told KNX News.
Around 2 p.m., the fire burned 720 acres. As of 6 p.m., the fire burned 836 acres, and as of 6:30 p.m., the fire burned 2,400 acres.
Containment remains at 0%.
200 firefighters are working to put out the blaze. Los Angeles County Fire and LAFD are assisting the Ventura County Fire Department in putting out the blaze. LAFD sent three strike teams, a water-dropping helicopter, and hand crews, according to City News Service.
Dowd said 33,00 people were under evacuation orders, while about 10,000 people were under evacuation warnings.
Evacuation orders were issued roughly south of Royal Ave., east of Madera Rd., west of Edison Rd., and north of the Albertson Fire Rd. Orders were also issued from south of Madera Rd., down to roughly Lang Ranch Parkway, which includes the areas of Woodridge, Eagle Ridge, Cobblestone, Verdigris, and Lang Ranch.
Evacuation warnings were issued roughly south of Madera Rd/, west of the Lake Park Dr, and east of the Bard Reservoir.
Crestview Elementary and Mountain View Elementary schools have been evacuated to Simi Valley High School at Cochran St. A temporary evacuation point is open at the Rancho Santa Susana Community Park at 505 Los Angeles Ave.
Animal evacuation shelters for small animals are the Simi Valley Animal Shelter at 670 W Los Angeles Ave. For large animals, you can go to the Ventura County Fairgrounds at 10 E Harbor Blvd.
