TURLOCK, Calif. (KNX) – Turlock Police arrested a man they say shot and killed a woman he stalked in October.

On Tuesday night, officers responded to calls of a shooting at Geer Road and Wayside Drive. A 22-year-old woman, later identified as Zobeyda Esquerra, was found in the area with multiple gunshots wounds. Esquerra was later pronounced dead.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers saw a light colored sedan driving away.

A Turlock officer who was patrolling the area tried to stop car, but a chase ensued until the car crashed into a fence on North Quincy Road. The driver, identified as 22-year-old Juan Francisco Ibarra-Tapia, ran away.

“As a result of this incident, two separate crime scenes were established.  Detectives responded to each of these scenes and worked through the night processing the evidence from the vehicle and shooting scene,” the department said.

A shelter-in-place was issued as officers searched for Ibarra-Tapia. A 9-1-1 call by a resident led to Ibarra-Tapia’s arrest.

Ibarra-Tapia  was put into Stanislaus County jail for homicide, attempted homicide, discharging a firearm in the commission of a felony, and evading.

Further investigation revealed Ibarra-Tapia was arrested in October 2021 for stalking Esquerra. He was bailed out. It was also revealed Ibarra-Tapia shot two O’Reilly Auto Parts employees. It’s unclear if that shooting was done at random.
