PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - The Korean Baseball Organization has suspended former Pirates infielder Jung Ho Kang for one year and has ordered him to perform 300 hours of community service for a series of past drink driving cases.

The organization says the suspension will go into effect when Kang signs a contract with a South Korean team.

Kang hopes to return to the league and applied to come off the KBO’s retired list last week.

Kang didn’t attend Monday’s disciplinary meeting Monday but issued an apology through his lawyer.

The 33-year-old Kang was the first player to go directly from the KBO to the major leagues when he signed with the Pirates in 2015.

Kang had a strong rookie year helping the Pirates get to their 3rd straight Wild Card game, but injury and his DUI in South Korea derailed his Major League career.

He attempted a comeback in Pittsburgh but was released last August after batting .169 with 10 home runs in 185 plate appearances.
