PITTSBURGH (93.7 The FAN) - With the Penguins trading Phil Kessel over the weekend and then signing forward Brandon Tanev on Monday as the free agency period opened, The PM Team with Andrew Fillipponi and Chris Mueller talked with a wide variety of hockey experts to talk about the new look team.
First was 93.7 The FAN Pens Insider Jason Mackey who said he didn't think Phil Kessel would be moved for "a legitimate piece that is NHL ready" like they did in Alex Galchenyuk.
Winnipeg Jets commentator Brian Munz joined the show to talk about the type of player the Pens got in Brandon Tanev, who they signed on the first day of free agency.
Munz referred to him as a "Tasmanian Devil" on the ice and a "special" player that does a tremendous job killing penalties and blocking shots while also being one of the better skaters on the ice.
Tribune Review Pens beat writer Jonathan Bombulie looked at the 6-year deal Tanev signed with an average annual value of $3.5 million and said he likes the player he is, but added "he's very expensive and that's a lot of money for a guy who isn't going to score a lot of goals."
Finally, 93.7 The FAN Pens Columnist Bob Grove told us why he would have preferred the Kessel trade the Pens had lined up with Minnesota that Kessel rejected as opposed to the one they finally made with Arizona.
"I liked [Jason] Zucker a lot. He had some years left on his contract and I never understood why Minnesota wanted to get rid of him. If I had my choice, I'd probable rather have him."
