Can’t wait for March Madness? Thankfully, the wait is almost over with conference tournament action beginning as soon as March 3. From the obscure (any SWAC die-hards in the room?) to the more mainstream stylings of the Power Five, the dance before the dance should have something for everyone. Wherever your fan-hood lies—hope is dwindling for my beloved Syracuse Orange—we can all agree the conference tournament slate, in all its drama-filled, buzzer-beating glory, is an annual must-watch.
While the Baylors and Gonzagas of the world won’t have to worry about their tournament invites getting lost in the mail, for many, lesser established schools, winning your conference is the only way to crack the guest list. Nearly half of the 68-team NCAA field will be comprised of automatic qualifiers from the 32 conferences while the rest will have to sweat it out on Selection Sunday (don’t plan on leaving your couch March 15), crossing their fingers for an at-large bid.
With tournaments spanning sold-out arenas from Boise to Birmingham, the precursor to this year’s installment of March Madness should be a wide-reaching, around-the-clock affair.
