Cam Newton tests positive for COVID, out for Week 4 v. Chiefs

FOXBOROUGH (93.7 The Fan) — Hot on the tails of the Tennessee Titans' outbreak, there's been another major COVID-19 development in the NFL.

This time New England Patriots starting quarterback Cam Newton has tested positive for the coronavirus.

With that, Newton is out for the Week 4 Patriots-Chiefs matchup.

ESPN's Adam Schefter and Field Yates broke the news on Twitter.

Now the chain of command will either vault veteran Brian Hoyer or second-year Jarrett Stidham into the starting role for the October 4 bout.

In a follow-up report, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport confirmed that Newton's case is isolated and that there are no further positives at this time.

Schefter doubled down on the Patriots testing protocol in another tweet.

New England has been vigilant in their testing and "retesting" procedures, which doubly confirms Newton as being a lone case.

There has been no spread.

As per the league policy, Newton has been added to the COVID-19 Reserve List.

For now, the Patriots are on standby awaiting further guidance from the NFL.

The game was scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday, but Newton's case could throw a monkey wrench into the plans.

The Patriots were scheduled to begin their trip at around 1 p.m. on Saturday, but are now standing pat while waiting for the aforementioned guidance from the league and more test results.
