The Jacob deGrom news is in, and it’s devastating for the Mets.
The New York ace’s MRI imaging showed a stress reaction in his right scapula, and he is expected to miss “a significant amount of time” to start the 2022 season.
Max Scherzer will now likely be the Opening Day starter, as deGrom won't throw for at least four weeks.
DeGrom reported shoulder tightness after a catch on Thursday, leading to his start on Friday to be called off. He is coming off a 2021 campaign in which his season ended in July due to elbow inflammation, which followed a number of minor injuries that disrupted what had been one of the most dominant seasons by a pitcher in history.
With deGrom sidelined, the Mets’ rotation, expected to be among the best in baseball with the additions of Scherzer and Chris Bassitt, has now lost its ace, and arguably the best pitcher in baseball.
